Course Manager's Guide to
Personal Protection Equipment
Activities and Exercises

Introduction

The Personal Protection Equipment computer based training course is designed to make the training of employees more effective and efficient, regardless of the number of people you must train. While the computer based portion of the course will provide trainees with basic personal protection equipment knowledge, they must also have an opportunity to participate in learning activities related to the personal protection procedures and resources used within your facility. The purpose of this guide is to integrate the following "hands on" experiences with the computer based training portion of the course.

Demonstration and Practice Session 1

Prerequisites

1. Trainees should complete the Eye and Face Protection section of the computer based training course.

2. Arrange to have examples of eye and face protection used in your facility available for display.

What You Should Demonstrate

1. Show and pass around examples of eye and face protection used in your facility. Demonstrate how each is worn, i.e., safety glasses, goggles, face shields, et cetera.

2. Conduct a tour of your facility, pointing out the potential hazards (vapors, dusts, large objects, etc.) that are present within various work areas, and identify the type of eye or face protection that must be worn when performing jobs within these areas. Make sure to point out the location and proper use of the eyewash stations located within your facility.

What Trainees Should Practice and Be Able to Do

1. Have trainees identify the potential hazards associated with the areas and jobs where eye or face protection must be worn.

2. Have trainees identify the type of eye or face protection that must be worn in each area or while performing each job where eye or face protection is required.

3. Have trainees demonstrate their ability to wear the proper eye or face protection they will be using as they perform their assigned jobs.

4. Have trainees identify the location of and be able to explain the proper use of the nearest eyewash station located in their assigned work area.

5. Allow trainees time to practice the above skills. Correct and demonstrate as needed.

Summary

1. Summarize the session and emphasize the importance of being able to identify and wear the appropriate eye and face protection in the areas and while performing jobs where eye and face protection must be used.

2. Answer any questions trainees may have.

3. Distribute any printed literature you may feel is necessary to customize the course for your facility or organization.

Demonstration and Practice Session 2

3. Demonstrate the proper donning techniques used with each type of respiratory protection equipment used in your facility.

4. Demonstrate how to fit test (both positive and negative pressure) the various types of respirators used in your facility.

5. Conduct a tour of your facility, pointing out those potential hazards (vapors, smoke, dusts, etc.) associated with the various areas and jobs where respiratory protection must be worn. For each area and job where respiratory protection equipment must be worn, identify the type of respiratory protection that must be used.

What Trainees Should Practice and Be Able to Do

1. Identify the areas within your facility were respiratory protection must be used and the type of respiratory protection devices required to work safely within each area.

2. Identify the type of respirator they will be using in their assigned work area.

3. Demonstrate that they are able to properly inspect a respirator before and after its use.

4. Demonstrate that they are able to properly don and monitor the type of respirator they will be using.

5. Demonstrate that they are able to properly fit test the type of respirator they will be using.

6. Allow trainees time to practice the above skills. Correct and demonstrate as needed.

Summary

1. Summarize the session and emphasize the importance of using respiratory protection equipment.
